Overhaul of WEBER #4 … Accel. pump could be removed, but… (The original blog was written on 9th Sep. 2007)

Again it was continuation of the WEBER overhaul.
I tried the engine conditioner to melt the sticking accelerator pump.  Based on the structural drawing on the manual and the fact that the acceleration pump rod could be moved slightly, I guessed the piston was sticking.
I sprayed the engine conditioner a lot, which was normally used to melt the carbon inside the cylinder, on the accelerator pump piston and rod, then went for a walk with my dog.  After 2 hours walk I tried to remove them.  I expected success this time, but it failed…

So I changed my strategy.  I inserted the screw driver in the upper part of the acceleration pump and pulled up it carefully using the screw driver as lever.  It removed!?  But actually only the rod was removed because the hook shape at the top was deformed…oh my god!  The piston was still sticking.  Ive got desperate and put the radio pliers in the WEBER.  I grabbed the piston with pliers and twisted left and right, then, finally the piston could be removed!

I corrected the deformation of the rod, but I thought it would be destroyed soon.  So I started to look for the new one.  I remembered there was a shop for the classic Mini and they were selling some parts for WEBER.  I called them and got the answer that they could prepare the part in 1 week.  I was looking forward to going the shop to pick up my part because I also liked Mini.

Anyway the sticking acceleration pump was removed and it made me very positive.  I started the cleaning of the WEBER.
I started from the engine conditioner because it seemed very effective to remove the dirtiness.  I splayed the engine conditioner a lot on the WEBER and wrapped it by wrapping sheets.

After leaving 2 hours with that condition, I opened it.  Then, the 20 years dirtiness became soft and could be removed by brushing.  However, because there was so much dirt, the brushing took time and the dirtiness seemed to become harder again.

Therefore, I moved to the next kerosene bath operation!  I put the WEBER in the plastic box I bought at 100Yen store and filled it with kerosene.  WEBER looked very comfortable and relaxed in the bath!  I put another WEBER in the washbasin filled with kerosene in same way.

Then, probably the dirtiness was already melted by the engine conditioner, the kerosene became black in a very short time.  I was surprised at the dirtiness of my WEBER!  I brushed the WEBER in the kerosene and found that the dirtiness could be removed easily.

It seemed this method was very effective and I wanted to continue it, however, I had to stop it for dinner time.  This days work ended here.

Clutch master cylinder overhaul #3

I was still struggling with the sticking piston of the clutch master cylinder. I thought I should give up and look for the new part for the replacement.  And to for my curiosity , I started to destroy and disassemble the clutch master cylinder piston by drilling. When I was drilling the piston halfway , I didn ’ t have any specific idea , however , I thought to tap the piston to make the thread.  I started to turn the tap handle , and I felt the feeling that the piston was moved.  So , I tried to pull it , and then suddenly the piston was removed from the cylinder. Finally I could extract the rusty piston! I observed the extracted piston.  It looked there was no risk of the leakage of the fluid because the hole I made in the piston was not penetrated.  Thinking the function that this part only holding the rod connected with the clutch pedal , it could be reused if the hole would be filled by the hard material. However , before repairing the holed

Clutch master cylinder overhaul #4

The overhaul of the clutch master cylinder , which I succeeded in the removal and repair of the piston with solder ( probably ), has been still continuing.  The master cylinder was disassembled and all parts were cleaned.  The condition of each part was not bad. In the last week the cylinder and rod were painted. Assembly started.  I checked the condition of the rubber parts originally used comparing with ones of the repair kit.  And I decided to use the original ones because the rubber was not deteriorated yet and the quality looked better than the repair kit ’ s one. Always the assembly is fast although I always struggled with the disassembly. Before After The overhauled master cylinder could be operated smoothly.  And I believe the appearance also became cleaner. ( My original blog was written on 26th Jul. 2009 )
