The day my "onboro ALFA" would revive

It was raining from morning on this day. It was not bad for me because I could spend time in my garage without hesitation while my wife and kids were watching TV in the house.  I fixed several repairs that I had thought I should do. To replace the ignition coil with the blue coil again. The ignition system with the semi-transistor and the blue coil looked like a retro combination. I changed the routing of the wire harness for the fuel tank to prevent the wire harness being damaged by objects in trunk. Previously overhauled rear brake calipers were assembled to the renewed rear axle. I found the spring washers of the caliper fixing bolts were deteriorated , so I replaced them with new washers. Rear axle and brake would be like a new if the rotor would be nicer. I refilled the gasoline and restarted the engine to check the restored fuel tank and the fuel system. I added the fuel stabilizer , which was included in the fuel tank repair kit , in order to prevent the fuel deterioration. The new fuel sender unit worked without problem , and the fuel gauge was revived. ☺︎ I should clean the glass of the fuel gauge… The engine was restarted , however , it took a little time. It seemed that the condition of the carburetors were not perfect.  I guessed the idle adjust screw for the #2 cylinder was not fully working , or the contact point of the distributor was worn.  I would check them. The electric fuel pump and the fuel sender unit were installed to the renewed fuel tank. The original fuel sender unit was heavily rusted , therefore I prepared new one. Regarding the new piping for the electric fuel pump , the inner diameter of the fuel hose on the pump side was 6mm and 8mm on the body side.  So , I needed to prepare the hose conversion adapter from 6 to 8mm.  I could find the aluminum one at the parts shop for the motorcycle. I assembled these parts and installed to the fuel tank. Finally the fuel tank and the fuel system were renewed!!! ☺︎☺︎☺︎☺︎☺︎ The assembly / installation was always fun. By the way , the paint inside of the trunk room was dirty … I had to make it more beautiful in someday. (My original blog was written on 29th Oct. 2008 )

The repair of the fuel tank had been interrupted after the rust removal.  I started the installation of the fuel tank on the body. Prior to the installation , I replaced the degraded fuel hose under the trunk room with new one.  About 30 years passed from 1969 when this car was produced , and the hose became hard and cracked. The old hose was replaced with new hose. The grommet at the body hole for the fuel hose was also degraded and cracked.  My stock grommet was little bit too small.  Then , I made a cut in one part of one grommet and spread it , and combined it with another 1/3 grommet. At a glance it looked like a bigger grommet perfectly fitting to the hole. ☺︎ Moreover , I covered the hose with the corrugated tube to prevent the deterioration. Although the gas was refilled , the gas didn ’ t come to the carburetors.  The electric fuel pump was working , but it still did blank beating.  I replaced the pump soon after I bought this car…but it was about 20 years ago!  So , I decided to replace the electric fuel pump to new one , and to change the location of the pump from the engine room to the trunk room ( because for the electric fuel pump to push the fuel is better than to pull the fuel ) . I bought the Mitsuba electric fuel pump , fuel hoses and a fuel filter by auction and installed them in the trunk room.   ( The wiring is tentative.  But I am ashamed because the trunk room is so dirty… ) However , even the new fuel pump was working well , the fuel didn ’ t come.  I guessed that the inlet of the fuel sender unit in the tank was sticking.  I remove the unit from the tank and found the rusty unit and its inlet was perfectly blocked by the rust ( I forgot to take the pictu...
