The day my "onboro ALFA" would revive

I started the assembly of the rear axle on the left side. First of all , I cleaned the rear axle housing which was heavily dirty with oil mud , and painted it with chassis black. Next was the assembly of the parking brake drum. I assembled the linkage of the parking brake checking the illustration. And went to the assembly of the brake drum springs. Also this time I used the vise grip to grab the spring and pulled it with my full power. Finally the revived rubber boot cover was attached.  It was little bit hard because the cover became thicker by pasting the tapes and adhesive.  But it became more robust maybe! Next would be the installation of the new hub bearing and the replacement of the oil seal. (My original blog was written on 3rd Mar. 2009 )

I repaired the broken rubber cover of the parking brake cable that was attached at the connecting point with the rear hub.  I used the self-adhesive tape and the adhesive , which were same ones as I used to repair the rubber cover on the right side before.  The rubber cover was completely separated.  The damage was severer than the previous right side one. The self-adhesive tapes were pasted on the back side of the bigger piece.  I made some cuts in the tape to fit to the conical shape of the rubber cover. The adhesive was applied on the surface to fill the gap. Next was to connect with the smaller piece.  How should I do ? I connected two pieces with tapes and made the shape. It looked okay. Finally the adhesive was applied on the surface again to complete.  It seemed flexible and durable enough. ( My original blog was written on 26th Feb. 2009 )

After finishing the restoration of the fuel tank and related parts , I restarted the assembly of the rear axle which had been interrupted since summer holiday.  The first work was the assembly of the parking-drum brake.  It took little time to set the spring on the brake shoe. At first I tried the following method , “ to make the ring with a tie wrap , then to pull the spring with it ”, which was taught from my friend. It worked well with the smaller spring.  But when I tried it with the bigger spring , the tie wrap was broken out.  Probably the tie wrap was too narrow. After trying several methods , I used the vice grip.  Grab the spring with the vice grip , pulled it with a full power and succeeded to set the spring. I also painted the splash shield for the disc brakes. Next would be the assembly of the rear axle hub bearing that was I struggled to remove. After long time I worked for the fuel tank , now I have come back to the rear axle. Since I had backache , I did a continuation of the assembly of the wire linkage of the parking brake at the rear axle which had been interrupted before halfway. A long time passed from the time I disassembled before , so I forgot how I could assemble them. Therefore , I looked for the parts list and assembled the linkage referring to the illustration in the parts list. I couldn ’ t complete the assembly on this day because it was necessary to fix the hub with a vice in order to set the springs. ( My original blog was written on 1st Nov. 2008 )
